Caring for our Older Pets
Our senior pets make up a very special portion of our pet population. Each year of our life as humans is like 6-7 years for our pets. They frequently become members of the over 50 crowd before we even realize it. Along with the increase in the number of years pets live, comes a rise in the number of diseases we see in our clinic.
Ongoing blood and urine tests can be beneficial before surgery. Before certain medications that require confirmation of normal liver, kidney, or heart function are prescribed. Electrocardiographs (EKG) and radiographs (XRAY) are also used to evaluate cardiac function.
Twice yearly physicals are a very important step to keep your senior pet as healthy and happy as possible. During these exams it is important that you report any health or behavioral changes that you have noticed since your last visit. Throughout your pet's life you are the best judge of changes taking place, and you are the veterinarian's most valued source of an accurate history profile. Please take notes of observations of your pet during the months at home. These may help you remember any questions that have arisen since your last visit.
