Masturbation

General Info

Occasionally, neutered or intact male cats and dogs may masturbate. This is more common in males that have had sexual experience or that begin to masturbate before castration (neutering). Males may masturbate against a soft-textured surface, such as a blanket or stuffed animal, sometimes achieving ejaculation.

In cats, masturbation or erection may accompany sucking various materials, such as wool. In these cats, preferred materials should be made unavailable and other attractive activities should be instituted.

Medication may be necessary to control excessive masturbation in some animals. Neutering (castration) is recommended when this occurs in a sexually intact pet. Masturbation persisting after a pet is castrated does not mean that the castration surgery was incorrectly performed.
