General Vaccine Information

Puppy vaccinations are performed in a series to protect your dog against a number of serious infectious diseases. We recommend protection against the following diseases in this area:

  • Distemper
  • Hepatitis
  • Leptospirosis
  • Parainfluenza
  • Coronovirus
  • Parvovirus
  • Bordatella (Infectious Cough)
  • Rabies

We recommend vaccinations be started at 6-8 weeks of age, then boosted every 3 weeks until at least 16 weeks for Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, and Parainfluenza. Vaccines should be started at 6-8 weeks of age and then boosted every 3 weeks until 19 weeks of age for Parvovirus. Rabies is given once in the series at a minimum of 16 weeks of age. Bordatella is given once in the series at any age.

We customize you puppy's vaccine schedule to maximize his/her protection against infectious diseases and to minimize discomfort.

After the puppy's series is completed, your puppy should be boosted once yearly for each disease. We recommend that we split up the vaccines and begin half that protection 6 months after completing the puppy series and the other half 6 months later, then continue alternating throughout their lifetime. This way your pet will be examined by a doctor twice annually.

We recommend your puppy be Dewormed at least twice during the puppy series and that the stool then be examined for parasite eggs microscopically.

We recommend that Heartworm Prevention be started on the first or second puppy visit and then be continued year round. Heartworms are a common problem in North Carolina and run around 60% infection rate in unprotected dogs.
