Pet Health and Wellness
Preventative Care is the single most important item in the care of your pet.
Besides a thorough physical examination, a fecal check for internal parasites and (for dogs) a blood test for heartworms, all dogs and cats should receive vaccinations customized to their lifestyle and disease risk. We recommend vaccination of dogs against distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parainfluenza, parvovirus, rabies and tracheobronchitis.
Cats require protection against rhinotracheitis, calicvirus, panleukopania, and rabies. For outdoor cats and cats with high risk, we also recommend protection against Feline Leukemia, Feline Infectious Peritonitis and Feline Aids.
No vaccination procedure, even in humans, is 100% successful or permanent. To ensure maintenance of immunity, booster vaccines should be given at appropriate intervals after the initial series.
Dentistry
Dental care is an important part of health care for every pet. We offer dental home care products as well as complete dental cleaning services. We recommend pre-operative anesthesia lab tests be performed before the cleaning. Some pets with extensive soft tissue infection may need pre-operative antibiotics started a day or two before the cleaning process. Pets scheduled for dental cleaning come in for the day and are released that evening.
Dental cleaning involves hand scaling, subgingival cleaning, ultrasonic cleaning, and polishing. You can see in the pictures to the left that cleaning is a neccesary and vital step to acheiving health for your pets.
We are now also using OraVet® Plaque Prevention Gel, a polymerized wax, which is applied along the outside gum margin to prevent plaque formation in this area. It is applied professionally as a sealant after a dental cleaning, and is then also supplied to the owner for weekly application to the pet's mouth to maintain the barrier applied in the hospital. Extractions are done when needed and bone grafts are recommended for larger tooth extractions. Root canals and orthodontic devices are occasionally needed. Dental radiographs may also be necessary for routine screening, or for problem areas.
Home care is the most important part of maintaining your pet’s dental health. We have a wide array of brushes, pastes, Cheweez strips, and special diets to help keep your pet’s teeth their very best.
